By Drew Sauveur. Jon “Bones” Jones fought a smart, aggressive, 5 round fight to continue his reign at the top of the heap. Jones has now defeated 4 former champs in Lyoto, Rampage, Rua, and now Evans. The grudge match didn’t end with the fireworks that most may have wanted, but it did give Jones the win he was looking for. Both fighters started at a measured pace, feeling each other out. As the fight wore on it was clear that Jones was the better fighter, landing more significant blows, on many occasions buckling the challenger with powerful knees and uppercuts. To his credit, even when Evans was clearly hurt he managed to weather the storm by clinching against the fence, or making space to clear his head. Evans did get some impressive strikes in, but for the most part, Jones seemed unaffected. Surprisingly, Evans chose to keep the fight standing for the first three rounds, staying in Jones sweet spot at a distance. He did attempt a takedown in the third, but Jones easily stuffed it, as well as the next attempt. Going into the final round, although Jones was clearly ahead on the [...]

By: Axiom Lebron. As we all know by now Peyton Manning has been released by the Indianapolis Colts. There will be a multitude of teams seeking to acquire Manning. Including the New York Jets. Prior to the start of last season Eli Manning younger brother of Peyton was questioned before the season if he thought he was in the same class as Tom Brady. His reply “I consider myself in that class,” He told 1050 ESPN in New York during training camp, back in August of 2011. Of course it was received by many including myself in disbelief. However opinions can be changed and after beating Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in two Super Bowls I do agree Elite is the correct word to describe Eli. Back to Mr. Sanchez. Mark Sanchez in his first three years as a starting quarterback has comparable statistics with Eli manning. Mark Sanchez in 47 games has 9,209 yards in 1,414 attempts with 782 completions 55 touchdowns 51 interceptions 51 and a quarterback rating of 73.4. Eli Manning in 42 games has 8,049 yards in 1,276 attempts with 690 completions 54 touchdowns 44 interceptions and a quarterback rating of 69.4 Mark Sanchez [...]

by Drew Sauveur. The rumors of Rampage Jackson having a bad training camp came true yesterday when he weighed in at 211 lbs. He will give up 20% of his purse to Bader, which if anything like his last few fights, will be around a 50k bonus to his opponent. In a post weigh in interview Rampage admitted to an injury early in his training camp that, although healed, didn’t allow him to get in the roadwork needed. From that we can assume his cardio may be lacking, which would be a good thing for Bader. Rich Franklin, who’s going to be doing some commentary for fuel tv, said that Jackson’s weigh in results were pathetic and unprofessional, I’m sure we’ll hear more about that later. All other fighters for the event made weight, including a reportedly “gaunt and extremely cut” Ben Henderson.

by Brian McGratty. The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to the land of the rising sun for the first time since UFC 29 in December of 2000 on Saturday, February 25 live from the Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. The prelims begin at 8pm EST on FX and the extended seven bout pay per view starts at 10. This loaded card features a light heavyweight title bout and contains seven top-10 fighters. The show will contain mostly Japan vs. gaijin (foreigner) battles, which is what the Pride organization sucessfully focused on in the past. Additionally, former pride superstar, Rampage Jackson will return to his old stomping grounds along with another Pride veteran and K-1 champion, Mark Hunt. The UFC hopes to ignite the dormant MMA scene in Japan much as they did down in Brazil last year. Anthonty Pettis (#11 LW) vs. Joe Lauzon (#12 LW): Pettis (14-2), the final reigning WEC lightweight champ, missed out on his chance to challenge for the UFC belt due to the draw between Edgar and Maynard in late 2010 ans his subsequent loss to Clay Guida last June. A victory over Joe Lauzon would propel him into title contention once again. Lauzon (21-6) has [...]

by Drew Sauveur. Amanda Lucas, daughter of George Lucas, defeated Yumiko Hotta via Keylock to win the inaugural Women’s openweight tournament over the weekend in the DEEP promotion in Japan. With the win, she improved her MMA record to 4-1. Amanda will have to endure further Star Wars puns as she begins to emerge from under the immense shadow her famous Father casts. I think she needs to capitalize on the fame and create a submission using a Star Wars pun. Perhaps the “Dark Side”, or something equally silly. At least she can have fun while pummeling opponents into submission. Check her out in the video below.

by Drew Sauveur. UFC 144 will take place on Feb 26th in Saitama Japan. The card will be headlined by a Lightweight championship bout between reigning champ Frankie “the answer” Edgar, and veteran contender Ben Henderson. Let’s break down this fight: Frankie Edgar: Height – 5’-6”. Weight – 154lbs (reported walk around weight). Strengths: Cardio, Iron Chin, ability to recuperate, and superior footwork. Weakness: Well, there are only a few small patterns in his stand-up that can be mentioned, but other than that, he isn’t a power puncher, nor a submission specialist. Last 3 fights: Gray Maynard – KO, Gray Maynard – Draw, BJ Penn – Decision Key to Win: Continue to be the fast, elusive striker that he is. Edgar must vary his attack, and his defence. Edgar has a bad habit of dropping the hand of the side he’s circling to, which leaves him open to a stiff jab. In his last 2 fights against Gray Maynard, he got in trouble by dropping his lead hand slightly when circling, and Maynard found the hole, once with a heavy uppercut, and the other with a slapping left hook. In both situations, Edgar did what a champion does, gritted his [...]

by Drew Sauveur. Welterweight Jake Ellenberger continued his rise to the title last night against a game Diego Sanchez in Omaha, Newbraska. Ellenberger used a precise striking game and frenetic pace to keep the former “Nightmare” at bay for the first 2 rounds. Diego did storm back and almost took the fight in the third but was unable to finish. The judges ruled it a unanimous decision. Stefan Struve, who still neglects to use his size to his advantage, took on a grizzly bear…. I mean a bearded, back-hair covered, heavy handed striker Dave Herman, and gave notice to the division that he has some heavy hands himself by knocking Herman out in the second round. Ronny Markes won a CLOSE split decision against Aaron Simpson for what turned out to be a solid card of top 20 and top 30 competitors, (except for the main card). Full results below: Jake Ellenberger def. Diego Sanchez via unanimous decision Stefan Struve def. Dave Herman via second-round TKO Ronny Markes def. Aaron Simpson via split decision Stipe Miocic def. Philip De Fries via first-round TKO T.J. Dillashaw def. Walel Watson via unanimous decision Ivan Menjivar def. John Albert via submission (rear-naked choke) [...]

By “AXIOM” Albert Lebron. Well my beloved family, friends, and fans, if such a creature exist. Axiom is back. From my hiatus, since my last article, many interesting events have occurred in the sports and entertainment world. As I predicted Alistair Overeem dismantled Brock Lesnar in UFC 141 on New Years Eve. The New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 46. This should end all the talk on comparing Tom Brady with Joe Montana. In boxing, Lamont Peterson upset Amir Khan for his Super Light Weight Championship in a controversial decision. Baseballs Albert Pujols signed a ten year 254,000,000 dollar contract with the Anaheim Angels. To no surprise, Nick Diaz tested positive for marijuana from his UFC 143 drug test. The NFL has its “Tebowmania”, and the NBA has “Linsanity” In the Entertainment world, we lost much loved and talented individuals. Robert “Epstein” Hegyes of Welcome Back Kotter fame passed away of a heart attack, Jimmy Castor, 71, American funk and R&B saxophonist (“Just Begun)”), of heart failure. Don “Soul Train Cornelius” of apparent suicide, and just this past week we lost Whitney Houston reason not clarified as of this writing. God bless their souls. [...]

By Drew Sauveur. Am I the only one who feels a little overrun by the new UFC? With an event every weekend, it’s almost too hard to keep up. The UFC for years was an event a month organization. This allowed for some media buzz around the events, some anticipation and speculation, now, we have fighters competing weekly, with little or no fanfare leading up to, and after. Now I`m one of the biggest fans of UFC, and MMA in general, (my Wife can attest to that), but even for me, it seems a little much. The UFC is now on primetime television, which is fantastic. This gives a wider base exposure, and more marketing dollars for the Zuffa franchise. This also allows more fighters to get regular paycheques, (which is the biggest and most positive aspect of this transition). I guess the question I have is, can the fans handle weekly UFC events? Will this become the anti-football, new Saturday night guys night, or will the fans tire of the constant events and move on? Time will tell. Given the Zuffa marketing machine they probably have a lot of tricks up there sleeve. For now, I`ll tune in and [...]

by Brian McGratty. The UFC interim welterweight title will be up for grabs on a card that also features an intriguing heavyweight bout and a battle to determine the #2 contender for the bantamweight crown live on Saturday, February 4 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV. Two prelims will air on facebook and then carry over to FX at 8pm EST with the pay per view beginning at 10pm. The televised preliminaries will be highlighted by #10-ranked featherweight Dustin Poirier facing newcomer, Max Holloway. This event was originally scheduled to be headlined by a GSP title defense against Nick Diaz, but an ACL injury propelled Carlos Condit into the main event with the interim belt at stake. Ed Herman (Pictured; #21 MW) vs. Clifford Starks: Ed “Short Fuse” Herman (19-7; 6-5 UFC), who we last saw defeat Kyle Noke with a heel hook in August, looks to advance in the talented middleweight division with his third straight win. Starks (8-0) will be in his second UFC encounter after defeating Dustin Jacoby at UFC 137. Starks was a former wrestling teammate of Cain Velasquez at Arizona State. However, Herman not only has a wrestling background, but is [...]
